Children's Bibles - March 2004

Clive Wilby writes ....

In March 2004 I went to Uganda for 4 weeks with help from The Harvesters Trust. There is a vast need there for basic Bible teaching and I go twice a year to do Bible teaching around the village churches. And the people are hungry for this and come enthusiastically to hear the word of God.

To give just one example:

One place that I went to is called Nkondo, about 20 miles north of the capital Kampala. I spent 4 days there doing Bible teaching. Because people live scattered around a wide area and travelling is difficult, quite a few of them slept in the church 'building' overnight even though it is very flimsy and open to the elements. The congregation contributed food for their meals and for everybody's lunch each day.

A number of pastors from other churches came which was encouraging because they took the teachings back to their own congregations. The subjects taught included:-

  • 'Who is Jesus?'
  • 'What is salvation?'
  • 'Africans in the Bible'
  • 'Who we are in Christ'
  • 'Not being disappointed in God'
  • 'Love for the brethren, for your neighbour, for your enemy.' etc.

The Harvesters Trust also provided the funds to purchase 6,000 illustrated scripture booklets in Easy English for children and I had the pleasure of distributing some of these at different schools. For most of the children this would be the only reading material in their homes.
